I thought I'm a rhythm guitarist. I don't need to work on that. Or "I have a cool voice. I will just get someone else to play that hard parts." I didn't have a good voice at the time, so I don't know why I thought that would work, and honestly, it's a pretty piss-poor excuse to not get better at something I loved. Close your eyes and think of the average night of your favorite artist? They're probably having the time of their (and your) life. They also seem to have a superpower of being immune to the consequential effects of extreme and constant hedonism... I want to point out that this is all in your head!
Take a long at your catalog right quick. Do you have anything in there that you are super proud of? Do you have a song that you love the production on as well as the writing? Maybe not! Maybe the reason you feel anxious and unsure of what you're doing in life is because you haven't actually done that much of what you love to do.
If you're Taylor Swift, you can announce on just Instagram that you have a song dropping, and that will do you just fine. Let's take a look at how many followers she has... Yep I'm off by 137 million.
I would venture to say that everyone has someone they can work well with! Just think about this, if someone can work with Morrissey and make the incredible band The Smiths, objectively Morrissey's best work, then you can stand to work with a few different people and see what you can come up with together!
If you notice a lack of professionalism in somebody and you keep using that person and getting frustrated, that is not on them that is on you.
The rhythm hand deserves some extra love! Stop telling yourself that someone will take care of the heavy lifting with guitar. Stop being the weak link in the band. Learn to play the damn guitar! It's nothing complicated, so don't feel overwhelmed. You just need to dedicate a little additional focus on specific techniques.
